How to play Imposter
- Add 3-12 players and pick a word pack, then deal the cards - everyone gets the secret word except the imposter (and Mr. White, if you're using that variant).
- Go around the circle giving one-word clues. Say something related to the word without saying the word itself or translating it.
- Once everyone has given a clue, talk it over and vote for who you think the imposter is.
- If a faker is caught, they get one comeback shot - guess the secret word out loud to steal the round.
- Score the round, rotate the dealer, and play again. Whoever has the most points after enough rounds wins the night.
Rules & variants
Turn on Hints to let the imposter see the pack name - though never the word itself - a gentler mode for new groups. Add Mr. White for a second faker who gets no word and no category at all, just pure bluffing; Mr. White needs at least 5 players so the crew can still outnumber the fakers. A tied vote triggers one revote among the tied players, and a second tie lets the fakers escape the round untouched.

Frequently asked questions
What is the imposter game?
The imposter game is a social deduction party game where everyone sees a secret word except one player, the imposter. Players take turns giving one-word clues about the word, then vote on who they think the imposter is - the imposter tries to blend in without ever knowing the word.
How many players do you need?
You need 3 to 12 players. The imposter count and the optional Mr. White variant scale with the group - Mr. White, for example, needs at least 5 players so the crew can still outnumber the fakers.
Can you play the imposter game online for free?
Yes - the imposter game is completely free to play online, right in your browser, with no download and no sign-up required. Play pass-and-play on one phone, taking turns to peek at your card, or create an online room and share the invite code so everyone plays together from their own phone, even remotely. Signing in as a guest takes one tap, so your group can jump into a room in seconds.
What are good imposter game words?
Good imposter game words are common enough that everyone can give a clue, but specific enough to bluff around - think everyday objects, food, animals, jobs, and movies. This game ships with 8 themed word packs, from Everyday Things to Hard Mode, so there are always fresh words ready.
What is Mr. White?
Mr. White is an optional extra faker who, unlike the imposter, gets no word and no category hint at all - they have to bluff purely from context. It's an advanced variant for groups of 5 or more who want an extra challenge.
