Imposter: my grandma barely understood the rules and still fooled all fourteen of us

Posted by u/imposter_nana on r/boardgames · July 24, 2026

We had fourteen people crammed into my aunt's living room after Sunday dinner, one phone getting passed hand to hand so everyone could peek at the secret word. My grandmother kept asking "wait, so I say a word about what?" and we all figured she'd be the easiest read of the night. The word that round was "volcano," and everyone but one of us had seen it glow on the screen for two seconds before passing the phone along.

We went around the circle saying our one clue each, out loud, in order. My cousin said "hot." My uncle said "erupt." My sister said "ash." Then it got to grandma, and she just said "hot" again, nice and slow, like she was trying the word out for the first time. A couple of us laughed it off as her not really following along. Two people later, someone else said "erupt" too, and I remember thinking that was a little odd but not suspicious.

By the time voting rolled around, three of us had quietly locked onto my uncle because his clue had felt the vaguest, and honestly nobody even glanced at grandma. She'd said a real, valid word every single round, just a beat behind whoever spoke before her, and it always technically fit the volcano theme. We voted my uncle out, he flipped his phone around to prove he'd known the word cold, and the whole room went dead silent.

Someone finally said, wait, did anyone actually check grandma's screen, and she just smiled and admitted she'd never seen anything at all. She'd spent the whole round listening for the very first clue and quietly recycling it in her own words, and it worked because nobody suspects the person who claims not to understand the rules. When we caught her and she got her one comeback guess, she guessed "lava" instead of "volcano" and missed it by an inch, still grinning the entire time.

We've played every family gathering since and now there's a standing rule: grandma goes right after whoever explains the rules that round, because apparently confusion is her best disguise. If your family has one relative everyone underestimates at games, do not sleep on them as the imposter.
