Reddit Would You Rather: Infinite Pocket Sand vs Air Water

In an AskReddit thread about minor superpowers, a user posed: "Would you rather be able to turn sand into drinking water, or turn air into sand?"

For the first hour it went the way you would expect. Turning sand into water seemed like the obvious humanitarian choice, and the early replies treated it as settled: droughts ended, water crises solved, one commenter already drafting the mission statement for a nonprofit.

Then a creative commenter completely derailed the thread by championing "air into sand".

"Think about it," they wrote. "Creating sand out of thin air gives you infinite pocket sand for self-defense anywhere in the world. Someone tries to mug you? Boom, instantaneous sandstorm to the eyes."

The thread never recovered. Someone pointed out you would never pay for kinetic sand again. A self-described physics student estimated the grams per second required to stop a charging attacker, with math nobody checked and everybody upvoted. A parent confessed they mostly wanted it for refilling the backyard sandbox without driving to a hardware store.

The reply section spent hours building an entire fictional lore around the 'Pocket Sand Master'. He got an origin story involving a rigged carnival game, a training montage at an abandoned quarry, and a sworn enemy called The Glassblower who kept trying to melt his ammunition. "His only weakness is rain," one reply declared, and a hundred people solemnly agreed that wet sand doesn't throw.

By the next morning the consensus had quietly flipped. Even committed water voters admitted they were only staying for the lore. u/desert_fox returned to a comment section they no longer recognized and added an edit: "I asked a simple hypothetical and came back to a cinematic universe."

The thread eventually slowed down, but the bit refused to die. For weeks afterward, any post that so much as mentioned a beach would get one reply, always the same: never mind the water, respect the sand.
